Settecolli. Sjoestroem show, Ponselè-Di Liddo are surprises

First of all Aurora Ponselè who shines as swimmer more than distance runner. The Hungarian champion Katinka Hosszu wins 400m freestyle with 4'05"92, replaying the time of Monaco (4’05”51) and preceding Boglara Kapas, second with 4’07”13. But the true final surprise is Aurora Ponselè becoming the third Italian performer with 4'07"62 behind the world record holder Federica Pellegrini (pp G 3'59"15; T 4'01"97) and Alessia Filippi (pp G 4'07"15; T 4'08"43) and the second with tissue swimsuit passing over Martina De Memme (pp T 4'07"69).
The22-years-old swimmer of CC Aniene improves of more than two seconds her personal record with 4’09”68 swum on last 20 December, after her 4'10"86 in Spring Championships in Riccione. The time is under the time limit (4'08"20) requested by Federnuoto for the European Championships. “I am very happy; I hoped to swim well, but I didn’t expect a time like this. I’m shining”, satisfied tells.
Two event records are broken. In 100m breaststroke the Lithuanian Giedrius Titenis with 59"75 being ahead the Hungarian champion Daniel Gyurta, second with 1'00"32, and breaks the record of 59"95 established by Fabio Scozzoli last year. But the challenge is postponed. In 100m butterfly all the podium is behind the event last record, already broken by the Dutch Inge Dekker with 58”02 this morning. The Swedish Sarah Sjoestroem wins with 56”50, the best seasonal world time, followed by another Azzurra: Elena Di Liddo, second with 57”73. With this time the 20-years-old born in Bisceglie, registered with CC Aniene, swims her second Italian performance, behind the record established by Ilaria Bianchi with 57”27 in London Olympic Games. She further decreases her personal time of 58"12 obtained in Memorial Ottaviani. This is her eighth seasonal world performance, under the time limit requested by Federnuoto to participate in the European Championships (58”82). Smiling and excited Di Liddo: “I’m very happy; my aim was to be behind 58”. Good results arrived only two weeks after a hard work and I hope to continue to improve it in the next two months”.
The level is very high, as Sjoestroem underlines, world champion in 100m butterfly in Rome in 2009 and only few minutes later, she is on blocks again in 50m winning with 24”36, fourth seasonal world time, one hundredth behind the Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjodjo, who in the afternoon pays the balance with 25 hundredths. The Dutch Femke Heemskerk ranks third with 24”84, 53 hundredths ahead Erika Ferraioli, fourth with 25"37. “I’m surprised of my time in 100m butterfly and very happy of the time in 50m – Sjoestroem tells – Finals were fast and competitive. I’m happy to have reached the event record in 100m butterfly and to improve my result in the seasonal placement in 50m. I hope that Rome gives me luck for the European Championships.”
The different twins of Italian swimming are strong rivals of the German Paul Biedermann – world champion in 200m and 400m freestyle in Rome in 2009 – winning in 400m with 3'48"70. “I have very beautiful memories here – he tells – People are warm and full of attentions. Compliments to whom arrived behind me. They are young and strong.” Behind him Gabriele Detti with a time in according to the time (3'49"43) swum in Settecolli two years ago and Gregorio Paltrinieri with 3'50"48. There is always so much affection and I feel in family”. “We are tired because of kilometers swum, but we swam times that encourage us and give us confidence. The way is right”, Paltrinieri tells.
The afternoon session opened with the success of Czech Simona Baumrtova in 50m backstroke with 28"56. Behind her, for few hundredths, two Azzurre: Elena Gemo with 28"58, her personal record in tissue (prec. 28"60 in 2011) and Arianna Barbieri with 28"63. After this there was the Italian tris in 50m backstroke with Niccolò Bonacchi winning with 25"31 ahead of Stefano Mauro Pizzamiglio (25"39) and Simone Sabbioni (25"51). Mirco Di Tora ranks fourth, at eight hundredths to podium. In 100m butterfly, the Hungarian surprise Bence Pulai shining with 52”59 ahead of the Olympic Russian champion Evgeny Korotyshkin and Piero Codia, both with 52”63. Matteo Rivolta was won in Italian derby. The Milan champion, with a ticket ready to Berlin, ranks sixth with 53”. In male speed the Italian cup formed by Marco Orsi (22"22) and Luca Dotto (22"46) ahead of the Greek Odyssef Meladinis (22"52) but the wall of 22 is far. In not Olympic distance in 1500m the German Sarah Kohler wins with 16'29"96, ahead of Martina Caramignoli, second with 16'33"12, and to the distance runner Rachele Bruni, third with 16'35"56. At the end, strange but possible in alternative competitions and loading times, Federica Pellegrini wins the50m freestyle final B with 25"47.
