It is the 50th anniversary of The International Settecolli Trophy this year. This is a historical accomplishment which will be celebrated at the Stadio del Nuoto Foro Italico, location of the Olympic Games of 1960, of the European Championships in 1983, World Championships in 1994 and most recently, of the World Championships in 2009. Since 1963, this event is considered a “test” for those athletes who want to qualify for the world championships. The prestige of this competition lies in the variety of clubs attending it: 130 in total, including Italian and International ones with teams representing over 26 different countries.
The event, from the 13th to the 15th of June, will accommodate many international swimming champions These are: Ranomi Kromowidjojo, the Dutch Olympic Champion of the 50 and 100 freestyle ; Camille Muffat, French Olympic Champion in the 200 freestyle and Florent Manaudou, Olympic Champion in the 50 freestyle; Daniel Gyurta, the Hungarian Olympic Champion in 200 breastroke ; but also Brasilian Thiago Pereira and Russian Evgenij Korotyskin, both Olympic silver-medallists in, respectively, 400 medley and 100 butterfly. Amongst these there will be other Swimming Champions including Camille Lacourt, Coralie Balmy, Femke Heemskerk, Laszlo Cseh, Gergo Kiss e Zsuzsanna Jakabos. The Italian team, lead by Federica Pellegrini who will perform in backstroke, includes Italian Champions such as Ilaria Bianchi, Filippo Magnini, Fabio Scozzoli, Luca Dotto and Gregorio Paltrinieri. They will try to excite the audience of the Foro Italico with thrilling performances, trying to gain the last places available to complete the Italian National team that will participate at the 15th edition of the World Championships of Barcelona, planned from the 28th of July to the 4th of August.
The three days of races, with heats starting at 9am and finals at 5pm, will be live on Rai Sport 2. Thanks to the collaboration with FINP, the paralympeans 100m freestyle final, where Paralympic Champions Cecilia Camerini and Federico Morlacchi will compete, will also be transmitted.

”The 50th edition of the Settecolli trophy is important because it represents a fundamental phase for these athletes who have already qualified for the World Championships of Barcelona – explains the Technical Manager Cesare Butini – we will complete both the national team (for the World Championships at Barcellona and Universiade at Kazan) and the youth national team (for the European Youth Championships at Poznan) after the first qualifications at the Spring National Championships (see below for the athletes who have qualified). The objective is to confirm the team with those who have already approached the time at the past Spring National Championships in April and most importantly, check the condition for the relay races which have obtained the pass as a team rather than individual participants. This edition will be very important because the participants are all highly competitive. It will be a valid test especially for sprinters and mid-distance athletes. Unfortunately, some important athletes such as Paltrinieri, Detti and Mizzau, may not be in their ideal conditions, due to their current scholastic responsibilities. Passionate fans will be thrilled and excited especially in races like sprinting, with important athletes such as Dotto, Orsi, Gilot, Bousquet and Manaudou; breastroke with Scozzoli and Gyurta; butterfly between Korothyskin and Rivolta, medley between Verraszto, Cseh, Thiago Pereira, Turrini and Marin and 400 freestyle between Muffat and Pellegrini”.

But this year the Settecolli Trophy will not be only about swimming. Upon completion of the finals on Thursday afternoon, their will be space for an exhibition of the World champion and Olympic vice champion  “Settebello”. The Italian athletes, now training at the FIN center in Ostia from the 27th of May, will be divided in two teams for a scrimmage open to the public. The match will start at 8:00 pm and will be referee by Mario Bianchi and Stefano Riccitelli. It will be the end of the first phase of training, on Friday 14th of June, when Head Coach Alessandro Campagna will communicate who of the Italian athletes will participate at the Mediterranean Games scheduled from the 19th to the 26th of June, in Mersin, Turkey.

MARIO SAINI TROPHY
A ranking per nation will be created based on the results of all the races of the 50th Settecolli Competition, in order to assign the annual Trophy dedicated to Mario Saini. The scores will work as follows: 7 points to the Winning Team, 5 points to the 2nd team, 4 points to the 3rd team, 3 points to the 4th, 2 points to the 5th, and 1 point to the sixth team. In case of parity, the points will be divided amongst the competitors; each athlete will be given the points attributed to his/her position.
