Fourth session of the 54th Trofeo Sette Colli/International Swimming competition. Sixty-seven heats in the last race day. The tenth event record is broken by the Ukrainian Andriy Govorov swimming in 50m-butterfly with 23''09. The European champion in London 2016 breaks the time of 23''27 fixed by the Brazilian Nicholas Santos in 2013. The Italian record holder Piero Codia (Esercito/CC Aniene) is out of the final ranking tenth with 24''16, nine hundredths of distance from the eighth placing, the last one useful to the qualification.
The programme opens with 200m-backstroke heats: five male and female heats. The Hungarian Peter Bernek ranks first with 1'59''11. Jacopo Bietti and Michele Malerba, both members of Circolo Canottieri Aniene, rank fourth with 2'00''04 and seventh with 2'00''72, respectively. The victory is Hungarian also among the females with Kata Burian ranking first with 2'10''64, ahead the 21-years-old Venetian Margherita Panziera (CC Aniene) (2'12''64) and the Australian Sian Whittaker (2'12''57).
The British Charlotte Atkinson is the fastest in female 200m-butterfly winning with 2'10''09. Behind her, a wonderful Ilaria Bianchi, who after ranking first in Saturday 100m, reaches the time of 2'10''77. The 27-years-old Emilian swimmer – member of Fiamme Azzurre and NC Azzurra 91 – decreases her personal record of four seconds (the previous time was 2'14''81, reached on 10th July 2008 in Ravenna) ranking ninth among the Italian performers.
Then the 200m-breaststroke heats. Among males, the Austrian young talent Christopher Rothbauer wins with 2'13''27 ahead the German Marco Koch with 2'13''44, two hundredths ahead Luca Pizzini (Carabinieri/Fondazione Bentegodi) and eight hundredths ahead Flavio Bizzari (Carabinieri/CC Aniene) ranking fourth with 2'13''52. Among females, the best time is reached by the European and bronze champion Rikke Moeller Pedersen (2'25''99). The 28-years-old Danish athlete ranks ahead the British Molly Renshaw (2'27''62), the Czech Martina Moravcikova (2'28''58) and Francesca Fangio (SMGM Team Lombardia) (2'28''85). Ilaria Scarcella (CC Aniene) obtains the seventh time with 2'29''95.
The 100m-freestyle is sad for the Italian Swimming. The ex-twice-World champion and Olympic silver champion in London 2012 James Magnussen wins with 48''78. The unique Italian signature in Final A is given by the 23-years-old Tuscan Lorenzo Zazzeri (member of NC Firenze and trained by Fabrizio Verniani) with 49''42. This time is his fourth personal performance. The European champion Luca Dotto (Carabinieri/Larus Nuoto) and Filippo Magnini (CC Aniene) are out ranking eleventh and sixteenth with 49''51 and 49''90, respectively. Both are admitted in Final B.
In the afternoon, the female 50m-freestyle promises a great show. After the heats, the Dutch Ranomi Kromowidjojo is ahead all, looking for her third success at 54th Sette Colli after the 50m-butterfly and 100m-freestyle. The 27-years-old athlete, with Suriname origins – Olympic gold medalist in London 2012, silver medalist in Kazan and European reigning champion – swims in 24''74. Behind her, the Danish Pernille Blume with 24''85 and her fellow countrywoman Tamara Van Vliet with 24''97. Lucrezia Raco (CC Aniene) ranks eighth with 25''43, three hundredths higher than her personal record.
The 200m-medley closes the morning session. The Swiss Jeremys Desplanches and the British Olympic vice-champion and silver medalist Siobhan-Marie O'Connor are ahead with 1'59''48 and 2'12''55, respectively. Among the Italian athletes, the first are Giovanni Sorriso (CC Aniene) ranking fourth with 2'01''08 and Sara Franceschi (Fiamme Gialle/Nuoto Livorno) ranking fifth with 2'13''35.
